Pachangá In 2017 an initiative by Guarionex Morales-Matos and Daniel Alejandro Santiago-Tapia impels a new chamber ensemble specialized in Puerto Rican popular music: Pachangá. The term refers colloquially to fun and delight, anticipating the festive character of the ensemble. The fourteen members of Pachangá (thirteen singers and one percussionist) have solid careers of passionate convergences in popular music and its traditional genres. Which is how bolero, cha-cha-chá, seis, aguinaldo, bomba, plena, guaracha and even salsa define the selections in the repertoire. For the first time a Puerto Rican a cappella vocal ensemble devotes its work solely to the heritage of our national music. Pachangá makes this focus their vocation; an in-depth exploration of the most beautiful creations in the treasury of Puerto Rican popular music. Pachangá gives voice to the inspiration of José Ignacio Quintón, Juan Morel-Campos, Braulio Dueño-Colón, Sylvia Rexach, Esteban Taronjí, Pedro Flores, Rafael Hernández, Noel Estrada, Claudio Ferrer, Bobby Capó, Francisco López-Vidal, Manuel Jiménez, Roberto Angleró, Leopoldo González-Porrás, Roberto Cole, Rafael Ortiz-Escuté, Amaury Veray-Torregrosa, Myrta Silva, Antonio Cabán-Vale, Benito de Jesús, Catalino “Tite” Curet-Alonso, Edmundo Disdier, Tito Henríquez y Puchi Balseiro, among many other luminaries who chiseled our national identity with their songs. The proposal will not only include concerts, it will also address the educational component through dynamic educational lectures studying Puerto Rican popular genres, the repertoire of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and their composers. It will also offer workshops for choirs interested in interpreting Puerto Rican music in and outside of Puerto Rico. As arranger and composer, the work of Guarionex Morales-Matos permeates the artistic proposal with a unique individuality, while suggesting a reformulation for the harmonic approach of the classics in national popular music.
