The names mean “Freedom and Peace” – but they have crushed their people and declared war on the West. They were Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic and his wife, Mira Markovic, known to friends and foe alike as Sloba and Mira. They were called Romeo and Juliet at school because ethey were never apart. In 1998, they controlled the strange citadel of Serbian politics like a royal court. Mira regularly burst into tears while discussing affairs of state. Milosevic responded by speaking to her in ‘baby talk’. A former close confidant described Mnira as “pathologically insane”. Christopher Dunkley in the Financial Times (24.4.99) describes it as “an excellent report”. Reporter Phil Rees and Producer Frank Smith create a bizarre yet vivid picture…” According to James Delingpole in the New Statesman (1.5.99), the film was “illuminating” and “cogently argued”. The Guardian (24.4.99) wrote: “Given how much you learn during 50 minutes of Correspondent, this shows you how little everything that has been written about the crisis in Kosovo has actually told you.” The Daily Mail (25.4.99) said the documentary was “eye-opening” and “frightening”. “Extraordinary” – Daily Express (24.4.99) “Absorbing…gripping” – Independent (24.4.99) Producer: Frank Smith Picture Editor: Rob Moore Assistant producer: Suzana Vasiljevic Executive Producer: Fiona Stourton
