The names mean “Freedom and Peace” – but they have crushed their people and declared war on the West. They were Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic and his wife, Mira Markovic, known to friends and foe alike as Sloba and Mira. They were called Romeo and Juliet at school because ethey were never apart. In 1998, they controlled the strange citadel of Serbian politics like a royal court. Mira regularly burst into tears while discussing affairs of state. Milosevic responded by speaking to her in ‘baby talk’. A former close confidant described Mnira as “pathologically insane”.
