One Friday night in August, with the warm summer sun setting beyond the window across my desk, I spend three hours hunched over my tablet crafting an animated remake of a 30-second scene from the 2001 animated film, Shrek. I did this for Shrek Retold, a crowdsourced remake of Shrek, organized by 3GI, the host of Shrekfest, a viridescent lucid dream of a festival. This video is an exploration of the Shrek fandom—how it came to be, who are its participants, and why it's so weird. Because the Shrek fandom—born from the internet—is truly not like any other fandom, online or elsewhere. The crowdsourced remake, Shrek Retold, will be released on 3GI’s YouTube channel on Nov. 29. Created for Quartz, 2018. https://qz.com/quartzy/1460786/the-artists-behind-the-internets-most-misunderstood-fandom/
