Few things get people more excited and in the Holiday mood than the infamous Starbucks Holiday Cups. Material Group found a way to bring these iconic coffee cups to life by blending animation, augmented reality and interaction on iPhone and Android devices. The biggest challenge that Material Group tackled on this project was creating an AR application that recognized very unique and non-traditional markers. The characters on the cups served as the markers and the application was developed to make use of these classic illustrations without interfering with the artwork or overall aesthetic of the graphics themselves. Not only does the application also work well with the curved surfaces of the cup, it also recognizes wall graphics and other branded Starbucks items in-store. Material also concepted and animated the character animations and interactions that are triggered by each marker. So, go get a cup and check out the app!
