The Election Commission of India prohibits any campaign that exploits religious or communal sentiments. The Gujarat 2002 election campaign, however, was its spectacular failure, as is evident from this sequence. The Limadiya Chowkdi case was one of the first cases to be decided in the fast track courts. One of the main accused, Kalubhai Maliwad, was acquitted and promptly rewarded with a BJP ticket from the constituency. In this sequence, we first hear the details of the incident from the eyewitnesses/ survivors. We then follow Kalubhai and his lawyer Bhupensinh Solanki (BJP MP) on the election campaign trail. This is an excerpt from Final Solution, the national award-winning film that probes politics of hate. The film, premiered at the Berlin film festival, has over a dozen international awards, including the Berlinale's Staudte Prize (now known as the Golden Bear for Best Debut).
