Hong Kong Protest (July 1)

(Video copyright: Megumi Lim/Newsy) "I don't want Hong Kong to lose their freedom" I was moved so many times this week witnessing Hong Kongers' steadfast and desperate fight against Beijing's increasingly aggressive encroachment of their rights and freedoms. Their anger comes from years of being ignored by a government that is handpicked by China and supported by pro-Beijing business elites who have little interest in ensuring a hopeful future for young Hong Kongers. In 2014, the demand for genuine universal suffrage - what was promised to them after the handover - was ignored even after tens of thousands of protestors occupied Admiralty, Causeway Bay and Mong Kok for 79 days. Last month, 2 million (almost one third of HK - which is possibly the world's largest protest turnout by percentage) marched against the much-hated extradition bill, only to be met with a half-hearted apology from chief executive Carrie Lam. On July 1, the 22nd anniversary of HK’s handover to China, hundreds of thousands of peaceful marchers filled the streets again, while young protestors faced more rounds of pepper spray, tear gas, and for some, the risk of imprisonment. The message was “we have nothing left to lose”. The words "Hong Kong is not China" were sprayed onto the walls of the Legislative Council Complex, which to me encapsulates what many Hong Kongers desire - Let Hong Kong be Hong Kong. #FreedomHK
