Jae Ellis (7m56s loop) Two generations of praying mantises took up residence outside my front door. Research identified them as the introduced South African miomantis caffra. They appeared in many different forms and colours. The algorithm in my phone camera struggled to recognise these mantises in their natural environment, suggesting food or plant, and recording a confused and chaotic artificial view. Surveillance doesn't always understand what it sees, and mantises have ways to avoid revealing themselves to an unwelcome digital gaze. These bizarre, bold little creatures are a reminder of the untold scales and states of living that exist alongside us on our planet. We can observe productive and helpful global perspectives, views and behaviours even in our smallest, everyday environments and interactions.
