This group was formed in London in 1996 - they are singer Chris Martin, guitarrist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman, drummer Will Champion and creative director Phil Harvey. The band has not changed their line-up so far and to this day are still playing in their original form. They met at London University in the 90s and first called themselves Pectoralz, then Starfish before they settled on the name Coldplay, a name that a local student suggested. Coldplay released their first studio album "Parachutes" in 2000 - including the single "Yellow", which became their first Top 5 single in the UK. Parachutes debuted at #1 in the UK album charts and sold over 8 million times worldwide. It was certified 9-times platinum in the UK, 3-times platinum in Australia and double platinum in the USA, Canada and New Zealand among other places. Their 2nd album "A Rush to the Head" was released in 2002 and sold over 15 million times worldwide. It topped the UK, Australian, German, Canadian and New Zealandian album charts and was certified 9-times platinum in the UK, 7-times platinum in Australia and 4-times platinum in Canada and the USA. Three singles reached the UK Top 10 among them "In My Place" which peaked at #2. The single "Clocks" received a Grammy Award for "Record of the Year". In 2005 Coldplay released their 3rd studio album "X&Y" - the album became a worldwide success story, topping the album charts in over 20 countries, including the UK, Germany, Australia, Canada, France and their first #1 in the USA. It sold over 13 million times worldwide and was certified multiple-times platinum all across the world. The single "Speed Of Sound" became their first Top Ten hit in the USA, peaking at #8. In 2008 Coldplay released their 4th studio album "Viva La Vida or Death and all his Friends" - the album again scored #1s all over the world including USA, UK, Germany, Australia, Canada and sold over 10 million times worldwide. It was certified multiple times platinum worldwide and received a diamond certificate in France. The single "Viva La Vida" became their first #1 single in the UK and USA. In 2011 they released their next album "Mylo Xyloto" - another album that topped charts all across the world and sold over 8 million times worldwide. The single "Paradise" became their 2nd #1 hit in the UK. In 2014 they released their album "Ghost Stories", another #1 album in the UK, Germany, USA, Canada, Australia among other places. It sold about 4 million times worldwide. One year later they followed it up with "A Head Full Of Dreams" - it also peaked at #1 in the UK and sold over 6 million times. Recently in 2019 they finally released "Everyday Life" - another #1 in the UK. Altogether this band has sold over 100 million records worldwide.
