LIFE

The word “Life” is our common intention today to watch the Earth together. Complex life is one of the wonders of our planet and distinguishes her from the other planets and celestial bodies of our solar system. Many people believed that life on Earth flourished because we benefited from extraordinary conditions and a favorable atmosphere composition. In the late sixties, UK scientist James Lovelock discovered that our atmosphere composition was actually unstable and was maintained by life itself (bacteria mainly). Therefore, life created and maintained the macro-conditions for life to emerge and develop. This led to his famous Gaia Hypothesis co-developed with micro-biologist Lynn Margulis that postulates that the Earth functionates as a self-regulating system. They even claimed that Earth itself was a gigantic living body. Definition of life itself is debated, but it can be defined by the characteristics that distinguish living organisms from inorganic matter and dead organisms: growth, reproduction, use of energy… Humans are currently looking for other lifeforms in our solar system, planet’s satellites, comets, asteroids and exoplanets. Life is also being recreated in laboratories and it could be that it self-emerges from inorganic matter under certain radiation and physical conditions. Life remains one of the biggest mysteries of nature and we are lucky to live on a miraculously beautiful and living planet. This video is made with real pictures of our planet taken on April 11th by a NASA satellite located one million miles away.
