“Water is life’s matter and matrix, mother and medium. There is no life without water.” ― Albert Szent-Gyorgyi “It is life, I think, to watch the water. A man can learn so many things.” ― Nicholas Sparks This is an shadow play artwork completed as a part of my academic studies in fine art and visual media. Artist Statement: Throughout the centuries water has represented purity. It has no color, no smell, no taste, no definite form. It sustains all life. It hydrates, reinvigorates, and washes away all impurities. In this performance piece I contemplate the qualities of water, observing how its physical properties interact with food coloring to create a beautiful dance between pure and impure substances. With every drop, my thoughts ponder how the container of water acts as an ecosystem. It’s abstracted form allows the container to represent all other ecosystems, from the entire planet, to the tiniest cell. The change over time is subtle insinuous, and slow— before we know it, water sources are polluted, habitats are ruined, and living things are diseased. From watching the water, we can learn a lot about the earth, and even about ourselves.
