Handlers is comprised of footage of snake handlers at Pentecostal churches in Appalachia. Snake handling is a religious ritual where participants handle indigenous poisonous snakes, drink poison, speak in tongues, and go into a state of euphoria. The sound is a combination of the voices of many individuals speaking in tongues, which is a nonsensical language of sounds that people speak in while praying or experiencing religious ecstasy. It is supposed to be the sound of God speaking through the individual.
