David Baroch Stellar Activity Constraints from chromatic radial velocities

Radial velocity variability caused by stellar active regions challenges the discovery and characterization of Earth-like exoplanets and complicates the interpretation of real planetary signals. However, the spurious radial velocities caused by the presence of active regions on the star depend on wavelength and they can be helpful to understand which are the parameters playing a key role on stellar jitter. In this talk, we will summarize the results of simulating the impact of the properties of spots on active stars. We compare our results with observations of an active star and demonstrate that radial velocity curves obtained at different wavelengths can be used to constrain properties of active regions. This also represents a new approach to estimate the convective blueshift. Our results point towards a reduced convective blueshift for M-dwarf stars, confirming theoretical predictions.
