Tabdeeli (Renovation)

Experimental short, 2004, DV, 16:9, Color, 8' 51", Stereo There is an abiding image in our folklore of a child lost in a carnival. The city -- in this case, Karachi -- is also a carnival for the child who resides in each one of us. We wander through it with our loneliness and our dreams. This sketchy portrait is not intended as a political or social comment. Its isolated images float in the miasma of urban disorder like a dream. Or desire. This becomes a justification for illustrating these images with the words of great Urdu poetry. One poem is by Akhtar -- Ul -- Eeman, about a man's yearning for intimate human contact, the other is by Noon Meem Rashid, about dreams that are dumped by the wayside. Both reflect a ceaseless exploration that in it's self embodies change -- and renovation.
