Boijmans Megastructures: Building 'Célula Nave'

2009-07-07 0 519 Vimeo

It stands on eighteen legs, each leg made of eight socks, each filled with eight kilos of sand… In 2004 Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto specially designed 'Celula Nave' for the central modernist space at Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam. He wrote down instructions on how to construct the piece. After its first exhibition, the work was bought for the museum’s collection and stored away in two suitcases. In May 2009, the suitcases returned from the musuem's depot for the group exhibition - Brazil Contemporary. The technical staff has a challenge: how to get the work back on its feet? Ernesto Neto himself explains the work.
