Pictures at an Exhibition

The Cal Poly Symphony kicked off its 2012-13 season with music inspired by — and interpreted through — visual art. The centerpiece of the concert was a collaboration with Sky Bergman, an internationally exhibited and published photographer who serves as the chair of Cal Poly’s Art and Design Department. Bergman re-interpreted Modeste Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” with her own images. Mussorgsky’s music itself was inspired by illustrations by the composer’s friend, Viktor Hartmann. This is an excerpt of the live performance. This was a collaboration between David Arrivée, Director of the Cal Poly Symphony and an Associate Professor in the Cal Poly Music Department and Sky Bergman, Chair of the Art & Design department.
