KUKA, KAKA, CUCU

In the publication ‘kuku, kaka, cucu’, visual artist Raul Balai reverses - migrational and colonial - history. It is a speculative retelling of how his adoptive brothers travel back to El Salvador, his stepmother returns by boat to the Moluccas, and he arrives in a garden in Suriname. The garden where his parents would once build a house, but to which they did not return after military coup. All these journeys lead to a family history that hints at world politics. And in which, as in many migration stories, the question ‘what if’ is always just around the corner. ‘What if’ is disruptive, it makes you yearn for a future that probably never existed. But ‘what if’ also ensures the continuous representation of an alternative course of things, and ensures that what is lost becomes tangible. The publication consists of three separate parts that are connected to each other, but always remain independent. order here: https://extrapool.patternbyetsy.com/listing/1154888766/kuku-caca-cucu-by-raul-balai
