What is the future of 3-D printing? That is still up for debate, but at South by Southwest, it is all about the edible swag. Only a few blocks away from Mondelez International’s 3-D-printing Oreo machine, SXSW attendees can find 3-D printed candy. 3D Systems, one of the largest makers of 3-D printers, is handing out colorful, sculptural candy printed by the company’s line of “ChefJet” printers. The printers use sugar, water and alcohol as the building blocks for its candy, which taste sugary and fruity. Earlier this year, 3D Systems announced a partnership with Hershey to find ways to use 3-D printing technology to produce foods, including confectionery treats. The ChefJet series of printers are expected to be available in the second half of the year and start at price below $5,000. The printers are designed for high-end bakeries, cake shops and for special events. Videography/Editing by Jeffry Zavala, Grace Alfar. Produced for Waywire. http://waywire.com
