This comes as the mission marks its first anniversary after its launch on 3 June 2013. The mission has since worked with and supported the Federal Government of Somalia in peace and state building efforts, particularly in the areas of rule of law and security sector, human rights and coordination of international assistance. Speaking during a photo exhibition held in the capital Mogadishu to showcase the strides Somalia has taken so far, the Special Representative of the Secretary- General to Somalia Nicholas Kay pledged the UN’s continued support and called on Somalis to unite for progress. “When I can see pictures of children going to school, of students graduating, of markets booming and increasing numbers of women playing a full and active role in public life, then am very hopeful of Somalia’s future,” he said.
