Mugabe signs Zimbabwe constitution into law

2013-05-22 28 Dailymotion

A historic day for Zimbabwe as a new constitution is signed into law.

It replaces a 33-year-old document forged in the dying days of British colonial rule, and paves the way for elections later this year.

President Robert Mugabe officiated the document.

The constitution, approved in a March referendum, clips the powers of the president and imposes a two-term limit.

However, it does not apply retroactively, so 89-year-old Mugabe could extend his 33 years in power by another decade.

Many obstacles remain for the impoverished country, not least finding the estimated 130 million U.S. dolllars needed to pay for the election.
