Turkey could deploy army to quell protests, as clashes continue

No end in sight to the clashes in Turkey.<br/> <br />One day after several hundred people were detained by police, clashes erupted again Monday in Istanbul and Ankara.<br/> <br />In Istanbul, police fired rubber bullets to disperse several hundred striking union workers and leftists groups, who were marching in support of widespread antigovernment protests.<br/> <br />And in Ankara, police used water cannons to repel some 1,000 marching union workers, with clashes continuing into the night.<br/> <br />The protests, and the police response to them, have rocked the country for nearly three weeks.<br/> <br />On Monday, the deputy prime minister said the armed forces could be called up, if needed, the first time the possibility of a military role has been raised.
