In the interview, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said the decision to order firing on 'kar sevaks' in Ayodhya, was painful but he had no other option at that time since it was a question of the country's unity. He said over 11 lakh kar sevaks had gathered near the controversial site in Ayodhya and he took the most appropriate decision at that time to maintain peace in the country. The 'regret' about the Ayodhya firing shocked many, but political analysts said Mulayam was aiming to blunt Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi's Hindutva onslaught while keeping his own Muslim vote bank intact.
