California wildfires rage overnight, consuming more than 22,000 acres since Monday.<br/> <br />The blaze began 100 miles east of Los Angeles in the San Jacinto Mountains and has forced thousands of local residents to evacuate.<br/> <br />No injuries have been reported.<br/> <br />On Thursday firefighters made progress in reinforcing a defensive line between the flames and the resort community of Idyllwild.<br/> <br />The fire has reached four miles from Palm Springs, though no evacuation order has been given for the city of 46,000.<br/> <br />Nearly 3,000 firefighters, 17 helicopters and 10 air tankers have been assigned to battle the blaze.<br/> <br />The wildfire is one of the most severe of about 16 that crews are trying to contain in several western states.
