With the death of the telegram, will the P&T department henceforth be called the Postal Department only with no mention of the Telegraph?

Romance, as a concept seems too abstract compared to science and technology. Technology has always kept a fast pace ever since science took over from the ideas of religion and magic. From inventions of the industrial revolution to the electronic revolution of the 1980's, even up to the cloud technologies that we are seeing in our world today, it has been a fast ride, no doubt.

In the year 1837, American artist turned inventor Samuel F. B. Morse conducted an experiment that was going to revolutionize the way man communicated with distant lands. It was named the telegram, and the service, 'telegraphy'.

Telegram services in India were started by the British in the year 1850 and opened to the Indian public in 1854. In its 163 years of existence in India, the telegram saw many transformations. It played a major part in many great incidents in India's history. The British crushed the revolt of 1857 with a significant role played by the telegram. The telegram also played a major role in the Independence movement. Mahatma Gandhi used it frequently. Even when Gandhi was assassinated, the Centre sent telegrams to all presidencies and princely states informing them of the death of the great leader of India.

In popular media like cinema, Bollywood saw a lot of references to the 'taar' or the telegram as it is called in Hindi. It was represented as the harbinger of good and bad news alike and was always received with an element of urgency.

Today, as the telegram dies and all government run telegram services close down, starting July 15th, it marks the death of a technology and the end of a long-standing journey. The young generation might not have even seen a telegram in their lives, leave alone sent or received one, but there is one generation of Indians who have a great connection with the telegram that it is an end of an old tradition for them. As for the rest of India, it certainly is the end of an era. The era of the telegram.

This footage is part of the professionally-shot broadcast stock footage archive of Wilderness Films India Ltd., the largest collection of HD imagery from South Asia.
