An Indian teenager - seen here with his head covered - has been sentenced to three years in jail for his role in a brutal gang rape and murder last December.<br/> <br />The 17-year-old - one of six charged in a case that shocked this country - was handed the sentence in a New Delhi juvenile court.<br/> <br />The mother of the 23-year-old victim criticised the verdict, saying the teen deserved to be hanged.<br/> <br />(SOUNDBITE) (Hindi) MOTHER OF DELHI GANG RAPE VICTIM, SAYING:<br/> <br />"By not punishing this teenager, this verdict is encouraging other teenagers to indulge in such acts and does not provide any safety to girls."<br/> <br />The attack has sparked massive protests across India, where activists say sexual assaults against women are rampant.<br/> <br />In this case, police say the gang raped and beat the victim - a physiotherapy student - on a Delhi bus late last year.
