EDITORS PLEASE NOTE: THIS EDIT CONTAINS MATERIAL WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY 4:3<br/> <br />STORY: Hundreds of firefighters continued a battle to contain wild blazes in north Portugal on Monday (September 2).<br/> <br />At least 48 outbreaks had been reported since midnight, the web site of the National Authority for Civil Protection said.<br/> <br />The biggest firefighting operation was in Sever do Vouga where 100 firefighters were deployed as a forest fire burned on three fronts, forcing the shutdown of the main A25 freeway.<br/> <br />A fire in Gondomar was contained by air and ground-based firefighting efforts, but some 250 fire personnel were on site in case of a resurgence.<br/> <br />On Sunday (September 1), fires threatened several residental areas and dozens of homes were evacuated. Nine people were treated for minor injuries.
