"<br/> <br />Kirkuk is rich in oil and lies on the front line of a dispute between the Shi'ite-led government and ethnic Kurds.<br/> <br />The Kurds want the city to become part of their autonomous region. A referendum on the issue was supposed to take place in 2007, but political discord blocked those efforts.<br/> <br />Last month the death toll in Iraq hit 800, according to the United Nations.
