Mexican vice admiral ambushed and killed

Originally published on July 30, 2013<br /><br />A vice admiral in the Mexican navy was killed in an ambush in the western state of Michoacan on July 28. According to Reuters, assailants armed with high-calibre rifles killed Vice Admiral Carlos Miguel Salazar Ramonet who commanded the naval base at the Pacific beach resort of Puerto Vallarta, along with another officer.<br /><br />Local media reports that Ramonet was travelling in a white SUV with his wife, a bodyguard and a driver on Atlacomulco-Guadalajara highway. Ramonet ordered the driver to take an alternate route after learning the main road was closed due to a protest. A truck intercepted and blocked their way on a country road between two villages. Another truck carrying heavily armed assailants arrived minutes later. Both Ramonet and his bodyguard were killed, while his wife and the driver were injured.<br /><br />Authorities have arrested three suspects related to the crime.
