Originally published on July 28, 2013<br /><br />At least 36 people were killed on Sunday night after a bus plunged roughly 30 meters off a flyover in southern Italy, near the town of Avelino. Reports say the bus was carrying some 50 people, including children, back to Naples after a pilgrimage in the southern region of Campania.<br /><br />It is unclear what caused the accident, but at least one report says the bus hit several cars when traffic slowed, causing it to smash through a guardrail and over the edge of the flyover. Television footage showed damaged vehicles on the flyover. At least 10 other vehicles were involved in the crash.<br /><br />The bus came to a stop after falling about 30 meters in an area with thick undergrowth, which later hampered rescue operations.<br /><br />According to Reuters, a fire department spokesman said "eleven people have been pulled out alive from the stricken coach and taken to hospital, some with serious injuries.<br /><br />"'The situation is dramatic,' said the fire service spokesman, adding that several other vehicles had also been involved in the accident.
