As Republicans demand key concessions on Obamacare, Washington could be shut down with no budget in place for the next fiscal year, and a suspension of non-essential services. <br /><br />The normally sobre New York Times accuses the Republicans of being "delirious with ideology" as they demand the government postpone key healthcare legislation to get its agreement to pass what is normally a routine budget bill.<br />The Atlantic agrees, saying the Republicans don't even have the mandate to make such demands, as it charts their loss in the presidential elections, their loss of more seats in the Democrat-controlled Senate, and even the loss of seats in the House.<br />Paul Krugman has an even more fearful forecast of what could happen next: failure to raise the debt ceiling could mean falling back into recession and a shock to the global economy.<br />Meanwhile, in Europe, papers left and right worry that Greece could succumb to rising extremism. The Independent worries banning parties like Golden Dawn could simply suppress groups without addressing the discontent that makes them popular.
