U.N. returns to Syria on mission to destroy chemical weapons

The United Nations is back in Syria.<br/> <br />A day after one team of chemical weapons inspectors left Damascus, another has arrived.<br/> <br />The convoy of about 20 U.N. vehicles crossed into Syria from Lebanon.<br/> <br />This group of experts is charged with starting the process of verifying and eliminating Syria's chemical weapons.<br/> <br />The U.N. mission comes after an August 21 chemical weapons attack in Damascus. That attack prompted U.S. threats of air strikes against the Syrian government.<br/> <br />Meanwhile, Syrians in Damascus are rallying behind their president, Bashar al-Assad, and welcoming the U.N.'s arrival.<br/> <br />(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) RIMON MASSOUD, MEMBER OF THE LEADERSHIP OF THAWRA YOUTH UNION, SAYING:<br/> <br />"We welcome their stay because we do not have anything to hide. Syria announced clearly that it is ready to hand over its chemical arsenal."<br/> <br />The U.N. mission is expected to continue until at least mid-2014.
