Under the leadership of its founder and CEO, Cave Johnson, Aperture Fixtures enjoyed staggering success, earning him a fortune. With his newfound wealth, Johnson purchased a salt mine, built his facilities within those caverns and refocused his company on experimental physics.<br /><br />Aided by his assistant, Caroline, Johnson recruited esteemed members of society as test subjects to participate in experiments including the quantum tunneling device in Test Shaft 09 and beyond. However, by the 1960's, Aperture's financial success was in decline, and Aperture was eventually declared bankrupt. Johnson blamed Black Mesa for Aperture's financial woes, claiming they had stolen Aperture's ideas.<br /><br />Desperate for success, Johnson purchased 70 million dollars worth of Moon rocks for lmobility gel development. After discovering moondust serves as an excellent portal conductor, Johnson himself implemented it into Conversion Gel, but contracts a terminal illness due to exposure. In an attempt to cheat death, Johnson orders his engineers to construct a computer system that could store his consciousness. He died before the work was finished, and per his orders, his assistant, Caroline, was uploaded to the Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System, or GLaDOS.<br /><br />GLaDOS is activated for the first time and instantly becomes self-aware, flooding the facility with neurotoxins. Doug Rattmann, one of the few survivors, comes across a file on Chell, a test subject that was rejected for her abnormal stubbornness and tenacity.
