Tphoon sparks island evacuation

ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION<br/> <br />About 30 residents of Izu Oshima island were evacuated on Wednesday (October 23) ahead of Typhoon Francisco, which is expected to hit the east coast of Japan over the next two days.<br/> <br />The island, located 120 kilometres (74.5 miles) south of Tokyo, has a population of 8,500.<br/> <br />About 550 people, including the elderly and disabled, were asked by authorities to evacuate, but only 30 turned up to leave on Wednesday.<br/> <br />They boarded ships and headed for shelters on the mainland, local media reported.<br/> <br />Last week the island bore the brunt of the damage from Typhoon Wipha as it swept up the Japanese coast.<br/> <br />The category one typhoon, the 26th of the season in this part of the Pacific Ocean, killed 30 people and left 15 missing on Izu Oshima, local media reported.
