Score feared dead or trapped in Mumbai building collapse

Originally published on September 27, 2013 <br /><br />Scores of people are feared dead or trapped under rubble after a building housing low income workers collapsed in Mumbai on Friday morning.<br /><br />According to residents in a neighboring building, the collapse occurred just before 6 a.m. No parts remain standing.<br /><br />Reuters reports that: "rescue workers pulled about 20 people from the ruins of the building, which was believed to have been about 35 years old and housed families of a corporation."<br /><br />The building's ground floor was occupied by a decorator's business and the four upper floors housed at least 100 workers — mostly city garbage collectors and labourers — crammed into in one-room units, locals say.<br /><br />As many as 90 people are believed to be trapped the beneath rubble, according to preliminary reports. <br /><br />Hundreds of police and emergency workers crowded the site as officials struggled to coordinate the rescue response. <br /><br />Such disasters are common in India. A collapse in April killed 74 people, the deadliest single incident in decades. Two more collapses in June killed 19 people.
