A bomb exploded on a crowded carrying government officials in Pakistan on Friday. According to local authorities 17 people were killed and more than 40 others were wounded.

According to Reuters the remote-control bomb was set off on a main road in Peshawar. A spokesman for the Lady Reading Hospital expects the number of casualties to increase because there were also people riding on the roof of the bus.

The bomb was located in the back of the bus. Gruesome photos from the scene show a completely obliterated back of the bus, while the front seems to be somewhat intact.

This is the second major attack Peshawar has experienced in the past few weeks. Last week a pair of suicide bombers attacked a 130-year-old Anglican church, killing at least 81 people when they blew themselves up. This marked the deadliest attack on Christians in the predominantly Muslim country.

According to the New York Times, a Taliban splinter group claimed responsibility for last week attack, saying it was a violent response to American drone strikes in the nearby tribal belt.
