Alitalia plane makes emergency landing at Rome's Fiumicino airport

Originally published on September 30, 2013 <br /><br />A plane safely made an emergency landing in Rome's Fiumicino airport after its landing gear malfunctioned on Sunday night.<br /><br />The Airbus A320 aircraft was flying in from Madrid and belongs to Italy's national carrier, Alitalia.<br /><br />The aircraft's right-side landing gear failed to deploy properly during a thunderstorm.<br /><br />The jet made an emergency landing at Rome's main airport and toppled onto its right wing.<br /><br />Ten of the flight's 151 passengers sustained minor injuries.<br /><br />"The pilot and crew were good, very good. But we passengers were, too, even though there was a lot of tension," said an unnamed passenger, according to UPI.<br /><br />"We expected worse. We became aware that something was wrong when the airplane continued to circle," said another passenger quoted in the same report.<br /><br />The exact cause of the malfunction is being investigated.
