Singapore crane collapse kills two workers

Originally published September 30, 2013<br /><br />Two workers were killed and several injured when a crane collapsed at the National Art Gallery construction site on Coleman Street on Monday morning.<br /><br />Reports said the crane was lifting a mini excavator at around 10.30am when the boom suddenly collapsed.<br /><br />The boom and excavator fell to the ground, while concrete slabs attached to the rear of the crane came loose and fell on to scaffolding below.<br /><br />The two workers were pronounced dead at the scene by trauma paramedics, according to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).<br /><br />One of the dead workers was a Thai national, while the other was from Bangladesh. It is believed the dead and injured were struck by the falling concrete slabs.<br /><br />Three other men were seriously injured and are being treated in hospital.<br /><br />The National Art Gallery is at the site of the former City Hall and across Coleman Street from St Andrew's Cathedral.<br /><br />The accident is the second crane collapse at the site in three months. On July 25, a crawler crane tilted and its jib landed on Coleman Street, narrowly missing passing cars.
