Syria's opposition sets preconditions for peace conference

2013-11-04 6 Dailymotion

Syria’s opposition has set preconditions for attending long delayed peace talks known as Geneva 2 .

Speaking in Cairo, Syrian National Coalition President Ahmad Jarba told the Arab League he would attend the conference only if there was a clear time frame for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to leave power:
“We have decided not to enter Geneva talks unless it is with dignity and unless there is a successful transfer of power with all its institutions accompanied with a definite time line. And no to the attendance of the Iranian representative at the mediation table,” said Syrian opposition chief President Ahmad Jarba.

The talks are meant to bring Syria’s warring sides to the negotiating table without any preconditions from either party.

The opposition’s move adds further doubt as to when the conference will be held.

Arab and Western officials have said that it is unlikely to be convened this month.
