M23 rebel group ends insurgency in the DR Congo

The M23 rebel group in the Democratic Republic of Congo has called an end to its 20-month insurgency against the government in Kinshasa.<br /><br />The announcement follows an earlier statement by the government claiming victory against the M23. A spokesperson said the rebels had surrendered overnight and those that remained has fled across the border into Uganda.<br /><br />DR Congo special forces led the assault backed by UN tanks and helicopters.<br />map 30<br /><br />Rebel military leader Sultani Makenga is believed to have escaped to either Rwanda or Uganda as the army cleared an M23 stronghold of Bunagana.<br /><br />Fighting broke out in 2012 and close to a million people have been displaced by the conflict.<br /><br />As the DR Congo launched its final assault African leaders and international envoys met in South Africa and called on both sides to lay down their arms.
