Originally published on October 7, 2013 <br /><br />Gunmen shot dead a German national working as a security guard at the German embassy in Yemen's capital Sanaa on Sunday, according to a Reuters report.<br /><br />Gunmen approached the victim, who was reportedly a bodyguard of Ambassador Carola Mueller-Holtkemper, as he was leaving an upscale supermarket.<br /><br />After resisting the attackers, the man, who was reportedly armed, was gunned down.<br /><br />"He was alone and armed with gun when we tried to kidnap him in front of al-Jandoul Supermarket," said a spokesman for al-Qaeda affiliate in Yemen, according to a report by China's Xinhua news agency.<br /><br />The gunmen quickly fled the scene of the shooting, which happened in Sanaa's Hadda district, where the German embassy is located.<br /><br />"Twenty minutes later more than a dozen German forces accompanied by Yemeni Special Forces arrived to the scene," said a witness cited by CNN.<br /><br />Early reports of the incident suggested the attack involved the failed kidnapping attempt of the German ambassador.<br /><br />"The ambassador escaped but her bodyguard was killed as he tried to resist the attackers who managed to flee," said an unnamed diplomatic source, according to a report by AFP.<br /><br />The agency later quoted a spokesman for Yemen's Foreign Ministry as saying ambassador Mueller-Holtkemper was "currently outside the country".<br /><br />--------------------------------------------------------<br /><br />TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news.
