Originally published on October 7, 2013<br /><br />At least 19 people were killed on Sunday in the Peruvian Andes when a bus <br />went off the highway and plunged around 100m into a ravine, police said.<br /><br />The bus, en route from Lima to Acombamba went off the road in the Huancavelica region in southern Peru.<br /><br />According to local press reports the Antezana company bus crashed through a barrier early on Sunday morning near the town of Carhuaranja.<br /><br />Local radio stations reported that two children were among those killed. Around 20 others were injured in the accident.<br /><br />Police said that local authorities are using cranes in a bid to recover the bodies of the dead.<br /><br />Nearby residents and relatives of those involved in the crash gathered around the site of the crash and helped in the rescue effort, turning the bus upright in a bid to help rescuers extract the bodies of the injured who remain trapped inside the vehicle's wreckage.<br /><br />Deadly bus crashes are a frequent occurrence in Peru because of the country's many mountain roads, poor vehicle maintenance and driver inexperience.<br /><br />--------------------------------------------------------<br /><br />TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news.
