The Maldives elects Abdulla Yameen as president.<br/> <br />He narrowly defeated the favorite, Mohamed Nasheed -- the Maldives' first democratically elected president in 2008, who was forced to resign early last year in what he said was a coup.<br/> <br />During a bitter campaign, Yameen and his backers accused Nasheed and his Party of being too secular and close to the West.<br/> <br />After the ballot, Yameen addressed hundreds of supporters.<br/> <br />SOUNDBITE: Presidential Election Winner Abdulla Yameen, The Leader Of The Progressive Party Of Maldives Saying:<br/> <br />"The first focus of our coalition government is growing the economy, stabilise the Maldivian rupiah vis-a-vis the dollar and also to create opportunities for the youth."
