They then tied him up, and before leaving the apartment drew a heart with the letters "LGBT" (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) on a mirror.

Elderenbosch suffered minor injuries but did not ask for medical treatment, Reuters reported.

According to reports, the episode is the latest of a list of diplomatic confrontations between Russia and The Netherlands.

The Moscow attack resembled the attack of Russian diplomat Dmitry Borodin in the Hague on October 5, when he was allegedly beaten in front of his children by Dutch police.

Dutch media reported that the police were responding to complaints from Borodin's neighbours that he was drunk and abusing his two children, a two-year old son and four year old daughter. Borodin was badly beaten with a baton, handcuffed and temporarily detained.

According to Reuters, "The Netherlands has apologised for the detention of the Russian diplomat.

"Dutch police have not commented on the charge that he was beaten with a police baton, but did confirm that he was detained illegally in violation of the right to diplomatic immunity."

Earlier this month, the Netherlands launched legal proceedings against Russia for the arrest of 30 activists, two of them Dutch, who were aboard a Dutch-registered Greenpeace ship protesting against oil drilling in the Arctic.

--------------------------------------------------------

TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news.
