Events have been held across the United States to mark 50 years since President John F Kennedy was assassinated.<br /><br />In Dallas, the city where JFK was shot dead, a minute’s silence was held and bells tolled across the city.<br /><br />The mayor spoke about how the city had been affected and had moved forward since the tragedy.<br /><br />A monument was unveiled in Dealey Plaza, where the assassination happened. On it are lines of the speech JFK was about to make but was never able to.<br /><br />It was just before noon on November 22 1963 that a convoy of cars left Dallas airport. The president and first lady were on a campaign trip. As the cars moved through Dealey Plaza , the presidential limousine was fired upon. Kennedy was hit twice and later died.<br /><br />Former marine Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested for the crime. Two days later he was killed, and never able to stand trial.<br /><br />Conspiracy theories have always surrounded JFK’s death and continue to this day.<br /><br />Now half a century later, the United States has paid tribute to President John F Kennedy and marked an event many historians describe as a ‘pivotal moment’ of the 20th century in the US.
