Marathon coalition talks appear to have produced a breakthrough between German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives (CDU) and the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD).<br /><br />The country’s two biggest political forces negotiated throughout Tuesday night in a bid to reach agreement on forming a “ grand coalition”.<br /><br />It comes two months after Merkel’s election victory and if the SPD gets approval from party members it will enable her to form a government by Christmas.
