NASA scientists say an enormous crater on the planet once harboured an ancient lake that could have supported microbial life.<br /><br />The freshwater lake existed for more than 100,000 years at the base of the Gale crater, a 144-kilometer-wide formation created when a meteor hit the planet about 3.7 billion years ago.
