Tens of thousands of bats have infested the city of Charter Towers in Queensland, Australia.<br/> <br />The city council is trying to drive them away using horns, helicopters and gun blasts.<br/> <br />Residents say they have had enough -- of the noise, and of bat droppings that have covered their yards.<br/> <br />(SOUNDBITE) (English) CHARTERS TOWERS RESIDENT, AYLA POTT SAYING:<br/> <br />"It stinks, it smells, some days it's that unbearable you can't open your doors."<br/> <br />Animal welfare advocates say the removal is inhumane.<br/> <br />(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED CONSERVATIONIST SAYING:<br/> <br />"They have no chance to fly off, they have no chance to save their babies. They're just on the ground and they are probably injured and they could die."<br/> <br />The council said they will continue with drastic measures for the next 10 days to see if they can rid the city of the bats.
