At the start of the year it is time to take stock of who has got the most money – and it seems the trend continues of the world’s richest people getting richer. <br /><br />The top 300 wealthiest increased their net worth by close to 400 billion euros in 2013, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.<br /><br />Bill Gates retook the number one spot with a fortune the equivalent of 57 billion euros. <br /><br />Shares of Microsoft, the software company he founded, rose 40 percent during the year, though they account for only about a quarter of his total investments. <br /><br />Mexico’s Carlos Slim slipped back to the number two spot in the super-rich rankings. <br /><br />The owner of the largest mobile-phone operator in the Americas, America Movil, saw his net worth decline by about one billion euros. <br /><br />Clothes maketh the man’s fortune, certainly when it comes to Spain’s Amancio Ortega, along with extensive property holdings. <br /><br />The founder of the world’s largest clothing retailer – Inditex – remains Europe’s wealthiest person .. with 47 billion euros.<br /><br />Those who made their money in the technology sector were the top gainers of 2013. <br /><br />The biggest loser was Brazilian energy tycoon Eike Batista. He started the year worth nearly nine billion euros and ended it bankrupt with a negative net worth.
