The Netherlands has announced that it will cut output at Groningen, the largest gas field in western Europe, due to concerns about earth tremors.<br /><br />“Studies showed that there are risks and consequences, including earthquakes,” Prime Minister Mark Rutte told reporters at his weekly press conference before the details were announced.<br /><br />Gas production at Groningen will be reduced by a quarter over the next three years. The move is expected to reduce government revenue by 1 billion euros by 2016.<br /><br />More than 1,000 tremors have been recorded in the area since 1986.
