Jakarta floods worsen as further downpours arrive

Sustained downpours caused some areas of Indonesia's capital Jakarta to flood on Sunday (January 19), inundating homes, disrupting transportation and causing power cuts.<br/> <br />The National Disaster Management Agency, police and soldiers worked together to evacuate residents.<br/> <br />The National Disaster Management Agency also said that this year flooding in Jakarta had so far claimed seven lives and temporarily displaced more than 30,000 people.<br/> <br />Residents are taking refuge in public places such as churches, mosques, and shopping complexes. Some left their homes last Monday (january 13) because they lived in low-lying areas.<br/> <br />Floods and landslides are common in Indonesia when the rains come due to lack of awareness of the environment, water governance, and drainage facilities.
