The Greek ultranationalist Golden Dawn party has said it will find a way to contest local and European elections in May despite a crackdown on the party.<br /><br />Around 3000 supporters gathered in Athens to mark the anniversary of a 1996 dispute between Greece and Turkey but the gathering soon turned into a protest over the detention of party leader Nikos Mihaloliakos and five other lawmakers on charges of running a criminal gang .<br /><br />Two opinion polls released last week revealed that the party would receive around 9% or 10% of the vote if elections were held now.<br /><br />In response to the Golden Dawn rally, a demonstration was held by leftist extremists in central Athens.<br /><br />Scuffles broke out between protesters and police with stun grenades and teargas used to disperse the crowd on the streets and in the city’s metro system. <br /><br />Six people were detained and one arrest was made.<br /><br />Authorities had banned marches through the city to avoid bloody incidents breaking out.
